Its official, Honda Performance Development (HPD) will provide a new powerful engine for the A.J. Foyt Racing Team. HPD will provide its new, turbocharged 2.2-liter Indy V-6 engines to all Foyt racing entries in the IZOD Indycar Series Hondaseason-long IZOD IndyCar Series, incluing the Indianapolis 500. Scheduled for initial track testing in August, this engine is under development at the company’s Santa Clarita, California facility.

Two teams have joined with Honda Racing this year. The first was Chip Ganassi Racing in May and the second is the just announced A.J. Foyt Racing.

A North American open-wheel racing fixture since 1994, Honda racing has also played an active role in Indy cars as a Manufacturers’ Championship competitor and beginning in 2003, as a single engine supplier. The company had its first Indianapolis 500 victory in 2004, Manufacturers’ Championships in 2004 and ’05; and every year since 2006, Honda engines have supplied the power for the entire 33 car field of Indianapolis 500. There has not been an engine failure at the Indianapolis 500 for a record six straight years. With a win in the 2010 race, Honda racing now has one hundred total victories as a manufacturer and engine supplier in IndyCar competition.

It’s expected that announcements will be made in the near future identifying other Honda-powered Indy cars for 2012.
